                                              June

Even though the abortion pill, RU486,
has been used safely in other countries
since 1988, the Food and Drug Administration
admitted this week that it is considering
                                            unprecedented restrictions when final
approval for U.S. use is granted later
                                            this year. Restrictions
will be placed on which doctors can
                                            prescribe the drug, based on
their ability to also perform surgical
                                            abortions and their distance from
                                            a hospital. According to Planned
Parenthood, the FDA wants to track
the drug from manufacturer to patient,
even though far riskier drugs have
not been subject to such constraints.
                                            The National
Right to Life Committee is applauding
                                            the proposed restrictions,
and urging the FDA to stand firm against
                                            abortion rights groups. Pro-choice
voices must be heard -- restrictions
on RU486 will cost women's lives.
