Zack Wheeler's Comeback: A Race Against Time
In a heartwarming development, Zack Wheeler, the ace pitcher for the Phillies, is on the road to recovery and aiming to reclaim his spot in the team's rotation. But here's where it gets controversial: can he make it back in time for the start of the season?
CLEARWATER, Florida, is the stage for Wheeler's journey. After a successful bullpen session on Thursday, he's being treated like any other healthy pitcher, a testament to his progress post-surgery. Wheeler himself is optimistic, expressing confidence in his recovery and return to the diamond.
"I'm right where I need to be," Wheeler shared, adding, "I'm not too far behind."
Rob Thomson, the Phillies' manager, believes Wheeler's recent performance could be the start of a six-week journey to get him game-ready. Wheeler's response? "That's what it looks like."
The clock is ticking, and the target date is April 9, just six weeks away. But will Wheeler make it? He still has a long road ahead, and the Phillies are taking a cautious approach, ensuring they don't rush their star pitcher.
"I'm not sure when my next bullpen will be," Wheeler admitted.
After Friday's victory over the Marlins, Thomson confirmed the Phillies' plan: a regular buildup for Wheeler, with his next bullpen scheduled for Sunday, following a well-deserved two-day break.
During his 21-pitch session on Thursday, Wheeler threw with 80-85% effort, showcasing his four-seam and two-seam fastballs. "I felt smooth, natural," he said, a promising sign for his recovery.
In previous springs, Wheeler's preparation varied, sometimes throwing off a mound four to five times before camp, and sometimes not at all. "It depends on how I finished the previous year," he explained.
As for his next step, Wheeler is unsure if he'll pitch in a Grapefruit League game or a Minor League game before camp ends on March 23. But the Phillies and Wheeler himself are in agreement: no rushing. When healthy, Wheeler is a force to be reckoned with, one of the best pitchers in the game and a legendary postseason performer.
"I won't rush back, but I won't go slow just to go slow," Wheeler asserted. "If I'm ready, I'm ready."
And this is the part most people miss: Wheeler's resilience and determination. He's not just a pitcher; he's a leader, and his presence on the mound is a game-changer. The Phillies know this, and they're willing to wait for their star to shine again.
So, will Wheeler make it back in time? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the Phillies and their fans are eagerly awaiting his return, and when he does, it'll be a sight to behold.
