In a move that has sparked excitement and intrigue, Riyan Parag has been appointed as the new leader of the Rajasthan Royals cricket team. This announcement comes as a result of Sanju Samson's trade to the Chennai Super Kings, leaving a captaincy vacancy that Parag is now filling.
Parag, at just 24 years old, has already had a taste of captaincy during IPL 2025, stepping in for an injured Samson. Despite a challenging start with only two wins in eight matches, Parag's performance as a player during that period was impressive, averaging a solid 38.57.

In a video shared by RR, Parag recalled the moment he was informed of his appointment: "A lot of emotions and then straight to business... what changes do we need to make?" He also shared his strategy for uniting the team, acknowledging the challenge of keeping all players engaged when not everyone gets to play.
And this is the part most people miss... there were other captaincy contenders within the RR setup, including Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel. Parag expects their support, with Jaiswal already offering his congratulations and encouragement.
Parag's journey with Rajasthan Royals began in 2019, and he has been a consistent presence for the team ever since. His best season so far was in 2024, where he scored an impressive 573 runs at an average of 52.09. Overall, he has played 84 matches for RR, contributing 1566 runs and seven wickets.
RR owner Manoj Badale praised Parag's long-term commitment to the team and his understanding of their philosophy. He also highlighted Parag's ambition and the learning opportunities he has had with the Indian T20 team.
"He's had his fair share of tough times in the IPL," Badale added, "but he's incredibly self-aware for his age, especially considering the impact of social media."
