Brandon Lowe to Mentor Konnor Griffin as Pirates Camp Opens
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been active this offseason, aiming to strengthen their offense and push for a spot in the postseason.
Among their acquisitions is veteran second baseman Brandon Lowe, who came over from the Tampa Bay Rays. Lowe brings more pop to the lineup and, just as important, the potential to guide the infield, particularly Kap Griffin.
Griffin is currently the top-ranked prospect in baseball and could be on the Pirates’ Opening Day roster. With the team’s spring training underway, Lowe plans to pull Griffin aside for some guidance, offering mentorship beyond the stat line.
“Mostly about mentality,” Lowe explained on Tuesday. “There are elements he possesses that you can’t teach—power, explosiveness, size. But he also has a solid head on his shoulders, and he’s open to learning. I might be able to share a kind word or two.”
Even as Lowe intends to mentor Griffin, he remains focused on his own performance, acknowledging that the Pirates signed him to help the club win.

Lowe also believes the Pirates have the pieces necessary to reach the playoffs, and he’s impressed by the early team chemistry in camp.
“The core is in place, the established players are seasoned, and they’ve added some depth pieces,” Lowe said. “The vibe in the clubhouse is electric, and the way everyone is talking about the season points to a genuinely exciting time.”
Lowe is a two-time MLB All-Star.
